For Courtney Tanaka Makuya, being young is not an excuse to wait for change it is a reason to create it. A third-year law student at a university in Zambia, Courtney is deeply aware of the social inequalities that continue to affect many communities across Africa. Rather than hoping that governments or organizations will solve these challenges, she believes young people have a responsibility to take action in whatever ways they can. This belief is what led her to join the Volunteers Association of Zimbabwe (VAZ).

“Through VAZ, I took the initiative to intentionally help build a society where people actively care for each other,” Courtney explains. “I decided to be proactive by donating bags of clothes and shoes because that is what is within my reach.”
Her gesture may seem simple, but it carries a powerful message. Acts of sharing like these, help cultivate a culture where people support one another, particularly during difficult times. They also encourage other young people to participate in community service and civic activities that strengthen society.

“We are living in very difficult times where it seems the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer,” she said. “As a student, I wanted to reach out and help those who are finding it extremely difficult to survive. VAZ seemed like the right channel because they coordinate volunteers to support communities in different ways.”

For the Volunteers Association of Zimbabwe, Courtney’s contribution will go a long way in supporting less privileged members of the community. The organization regularly undertakes initiatives aimed at assisting vulnerable groups as part of its commitment to giving back to society. Courtney hopes her actions will inspire others to do the same.

“I believe that as young people we must be the change we want to see, and that change starts with contributing in whatever way you can,” she added.
