For many university students, practical experience is one of the most valuable complements to academic learning. For one Development Studies student, Ruth Chiedza Samakande volunteering through the Volunteers Association of Zimbabwe (VAZ) became far more than an opportunity to gain experience it became a life-changing journey of service, compassion and personal growth.
When she joined VAZ seeking an opportunity to contribute her skills while gaining exposure to the development sector, she never imagined that she would be placed at an institution dedicated to supporting children with intellectual challenges. The organization, Zimcare Trust, operates across 14 centres, providing care, education and developmental support to more than eighty, (80), children with special needs. Working with intellectually challenged children was entirely new territory.
"As someone studying for a degree in Development Studies, I have always been passionate about making a positive impact in communities. However, I had never worked directly with children who have intellectual challenges. I am grateful to the Volunteers Association of Zimbabwe for granting me this opportunity because it opened my eyes to a world I had never experienced before," she said.
During her placement, she assisted staff with various activities aimed at supporting the children's learning, development and well-being. From helping with educational exercises and recreational activities to offering encouragement and companionship, every day presented new lessons and meaningful interactions.
What initially seemed like an opportunity to give back quickly became a powerful learning experience. She discovered that every child possesses unique abilities, strengths and potential, and that patience, empathy and understanding are essential in helping them thrive.
"The children taught me as much as I taught them. Their resilience, joy and determination despite their challenges inspired me greatly. I learned the importance of inclusion and the need for society to create environments where everyone can participate and reach their full potential," she reflected.
The volunteer placement also helped her bridge the gap between theory and practice. Concepts she encountered in her Development Studies lectures such as social inclusion, community participation, human rights and empowerment came alive through her daily interactions at the centres.
Beyond enhancing her academic understanding, volunteering strengthened several professional skills, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving and adaptability. It also improved her confidence in working with diverse communities and reinforced her commitment to pursuing a career focused on social development.
The experience highlighted some of the many benefits of volunteering. Volunteers gain practical work experience, develop transferable skills, build professional networks and increase their employability. More importantly, volunteering provides an opportunity to positively impact the lives of others while fostering personal growth, compassion and a deeper understanding of societal challenges.
For the children, the presence of dedicated volunteers brings additional support, encouragement and positive social interaction. For volunteers, the experience often becomes a transformative journey that shapes their perspectives and future aspirations.
The Volunteers Association of Zimbabwe continues to create such opportunities by connecting passionate individuals with organizations that serve vulnerable communities. Through these placements, volunteers not only contribute their skills and time but also become agents of positive change. Looking back on her journey, the Development Studies student describes the experience as one of the most rewarding chapters of her volunteer career.
"I joined hoping to make a difference in the lives of the children, but in many ways, they changed my life too. This opportunity strengthened my passion for development work and reminded me that even small acts of service can have a lasting impact."
Her story stands as a testament to the power of volunteering where learning, service and human connection come together to create meaningful change for both volunteers and the communities they serve.
